With its roots stretching back to 1870, Peabody High School was the first public high school for African Americans in Virginia and among the first in the nation. Many Peabody's students were active in the Civil Rights Movement; several were at the forefront, for example, of Petersburg's first sit in, which took place at the public library. The school was integrated in 1970.
